Last week, Health Innovation Manchester launched its Hospital at Home campaign to highlight the benefits of the hospital care at home service in Greater Manchester. The campaign includes virtual wards and other technology-enable care at home, and brings together nurses, doctors and other health professionals to deliver hospital care in a patient's own home. We were delighted to work with the team on a behavioural change project to inform its approach to virtual wards. We collected 1,000+ insights to understand the views and needs of patients and clinical staff, which helped to shape plans to deliver virtual ward capacity equivalent to 40-50 'beds' per 100k population. That's around 1,250 'beds' across Greater Manchester. Delivering a high standard of care in a different way can reduce pressure on the health and care system, and can help free up much-needed bed space in hospitals. The Rural Health Redesign Center is proud to release our early findings from hospitals considering the Rural Emergency Hospital (REH) conversion. The REH is a new Medicare provider type created to address the growing concern over rural hospital closures. The goal of this new designation is to provide a means to preserve access to essential services for rural residents and to decrease the likelihood of hospital closures.
