LUBBOCK, Texas — Reuben Castillo, 47, took a guilty plea on Tuesday and was sentenced to eight years in prison for a March 2017 hit-and-run crash that took the life of Alejandro Hernandez, 24. Castillo will receive 589 days of credit for time spent behind bars.
Castillo pleaded guilty to Failure to Stop and Render Aid Resulting in Death.
Officers responded to the 400 block of Slide Road on March 24, 2017, and found Hernandez in the road with severe injuries. He was taken to University Medical Center and passed away on March 27, police said. Hernandez’s wife previously told EverythingLubbock.com he was crossing the street to grab some milk from the grocery store when he was hit by a vehicle, and the suspect left the scene. Hernandez’s wife was left as a single mother after his death, and she said there is “nobody like him.”

Later in 2019, investigators submitted evidence to a lab for analysis and were able to identify the vehicle involved in the crash. The car was found in the Dallas area and brought back to Lubbock. Police were able to determine the car hit Hernandez, and eventually tracked down Castillo. His arrest was announced in 2022.
